Jan 15, 2026There are not enough positive words I can say about Dr. Kimberly Lu and her practice, Issaquah Plastic Surgery!! I was diagnosed with breast cancer on 3/26/18 following a routine mammogram. That date changed my life forever. Dr. Lu has been alongside my family and I since this journey started. She came very highly recommended by my surgeon at the Swedish Cancer Institute, Dr. Lee. I am beyond grateful to have been referred to Dr. Lu and her practice.
It was very clear to me, from my initial consult with Dr. Lu about a week following the diagnosis that I was in the most capable hands. She shared her portfolio of her incredible reconstruction work and was so helpful in providing facts and guiding me to choose the right implant product for my body. Dr. Lu was patient with myself and my family; we had a lot of questions at that initial consult as we were navigating my treatment plan. Life was such a blur during those early days. She was patient and kind taking time to answer all of our questions and gave me the space to consider all of my options prior to my final decision on what route to go. I chose double mastectomies. Dr. Lu’s bedside manner from the time we initially met and over the course of this year has been incredible. As a person in health care myself, I find this to be just as important as all the other things that come along with a diagnosis. She made sure I knew all of the pros, cons, and risks of my final decision.
Further, it was evident that Dr. Lu is a great collaborator with the rest of my medical team. On 4/24/18 (just shy of a month following my diagnosis, I underwent the double mastectomies). I opted to have the mastectomies and my expanders done within the same surgery. Dr. Lu was very thorough in going over all of the pros/cons/risks of going this route out of the gates (vs. coming back in for the expanders to be inserted). She was supportive of my choice and never tried to sway me one way or the other. I knew I was provided with all the facts and had every bit of confidence in Dr. Lu. The surgery itself was a success. Of course, 2 weeks after my mastectomies, I was one of those who going this aggressive surgical route had one of cons/risks present itself, necrosis. Dr. Lu took it head-on and fixed it beautifully. It all worked out as it was supposed to because my pathology had come back at that time only to find out that a milk duct on my left side had cancer. So, I would’ve had to go back into surgery right away anyway. She fixed the necrosis and removed my left nipple at the same time. The final results today are wonderful.
Once things were healed, the expansion process began. It was a painful stage of this process, but I was prepared for the 4 weeks of the expansions because Dr. Lu explained it all very thoroughly from the very beginning and reminded me along the way what to expect. Again, I felt safe and supported thanks to her bedside manner and compassion. On 9/20/18 I headed back into surgery for my reconstruction. Thanks to Dr. Lu’s passion for her job and her amazing precise skills, everything turned out beautifully. I can’t be more pleased with the final result.
I also want to add that during all of my pre-and post-surgery appointments, I interacted with April, one of the staff at Issaquah Plastic Surgery. April was so kind, patient, and caring during every interaction we had with one another. Further, she was organized in getting appointments scheduled, billing, appointment reminders, answering my questions when I would call in, etc.
Well, here I am 1 year out of my diagnosis and 4 days away since my mastectomies one year ago reflecting on this journey. Yesterday I was back in surgery again with Dr. Lu having my right nipple removed. Again, Dr. Lu was wonderful in this process and supportive of my decision.
I know this review is long, but so has been this fight for my life this year getting to where I am at right now, cancer-free. Dr. Lu has been an integral part of this journey for me and for her, I am forever grateful!
